“Google Updated Your Business Info” Notification: What It Means and How to Revert It

You log in to your Business Profile and there’s a notice at the top: Google has updated some of your business information. Your hours look different, or the phone number has changed, or there’s a new category you never added. Nobody from your team did this. So who did, and what should you do about it?

This notification is common and usually harmless, but ignoring it can quietly cost you customers. Here’s what it means when Google updated your business info, and how to handle it properly.

Google updated your business info notification

The short answer

When Google updated your business info, it means Google changed or is proposing to change something on your profile based on information from users, public sources or licensed data. Changed fields appear in blue in the profile editor. For suggested edits, Google gives owners 4 days to accept or reject them, after which Google may publish the change if other public information supports it. Review every blue field and correct anything wrong directly.

Why Google changes your profile

Google’s goal is accurate information for searchers. According to its help page Understand Google updates on your Business Profile, Google collects information from different sources, including user reports and licensed content. In practice, that means:

  • Customers suggest edits using “Suggest an edit” on Maps. Some are helpful, some are wrong, and occasionally a competitor does it on purpose.
  • Your own website says something different from your profile, like old hours on the contact page.
  • Directory listings disagree. Justdial has one phone number, your profile another.
  • Google’s systems spot a pattern, for example lots of people saying you’re closed on Sundays.

Where to see what changed

  1. Open your Business Profile (search your business name on Google while signed in).
  2. Look for the notification about Google updates at the top.
  3. Open the profile editor. Fields shown in blue are ones Google has changed.
  4. Check each blue field against reality.

How to handle each update

If the change is correct

Accept it. Maybe you did change your hours and forgot to update the profile. Then fix the source too, like your website, so the two match in future.

If the change is wrong

Edit the field yourself and enter the correct information. Google’s own advice is to update your profile directly to keep it accurate. Then look for where the wrong info is coming from. Nine times out of ten it’s an old website page or an outdated directory listing.

If the same wrong change keeps coming back

That’s a sign something public keeps contradicting you. Check:

  • Your website footer, contact page and Google Maps embed
  • Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART, Facebook and any industry directories
  • Your signboard, if the complaint is about your business name

Fix those at the source and the repeat updates usually stop.

The 4-day window matters

For suggested edits, you have 4 days to accept or reject. If you don’t respond, Google may publish the change automatically if other public information backs it up. That’s why owners who check their profile once every few months are the ones who wake up to a wrong phone number and a sudden drop in calls. Check at least once a week. If calls have already fallen, see why Google Business Profile calls dropped.

Which changes to watch most closely

Field Why it matters
Phone number A wrong number means calls go to someone else
Business hours People won’t call or visit if they think you’re closed
Address or pin Customers get sent to the wrong place, and rankings can shift
Category Can remove you from your most important searches
Business name Changes can affect trust and verification
Website link A wrong link sends traffic away from you

Could a competitor be doing this?

It happens. If you keep seeing strange edits, like your business marked as closed or a phone number changed to one you don’t recognise, keep screenshots and correct them quickly. If your profile access itself looks compromised, read how to remove old managers and secure your profile and what to do if someone else owns your listing.

How to prevent unwanted updates

  • Keep your hours updated, including festival and holiday hours
  • Make your website and every directory listing match your profile exactly
  • Reply to reviews and questions so the profile looks actively managed
  • Log in weekly and check for the blue highlights
  • Use a business email as the owner so notifications don’t get missed

FAQs

Why did Google change my business hours?

Usually because customers reported different hours, or your website or another listing shows different ones. Correct the hours and fix the conflicting source.

Can I turn off Google updates?

No. But keeping your profile accurate and active reduces how often they happen.

What does blue text mean in my Business Profile?

Blue shows information that Google has changed. Black or white means no update from Google.

What happens if I ignore a suggested edit?

After 4 days, Google may publish it automatically if other public information supports it.
