How to Publish a WhatsApp Button on Google Business Profile

Adding a WhatsApp button on Google Business Profile is one of the quickest ways to turn searchers into conversations. Customers who find you on Google are usually in “action mode”: they have a need and want an answer now. Many would rather send a quick WhatsApp message than make a call. This guide shows how to publish the button correctly, what to avoid, and how to make it bring in leads.

Why every local business needs a WhatsApp chat option

A WhatsApp chat lets customers ask about prices, confirm availability, share photos of a problem or book an appointment without leaving Google. It suits people who cannot talk at work, prefer text, or want a written record of what was agreed. For you, it means more enquiries from the same profile views.

Before you start

  • Your Business Profile must be claimed and verified.
  • Install the WhatsApp Business app on the number you want customers to message.
  • Set up a business name, hours and a greeting message in WhatsApp Business.
  • Create your click-to-chat link in the format https://wa.me/91XXXXXXXXXX (country code plus number, with no plus sign, spaces or dashes).

How to publish the WhatsApp button on Google Business Profile

  1. Search your business name on Google while signed in, or open your profile in Google Maps.
  2. Select Edit profile, then open the Contact section.
  3. Find the Chat option and choose WhatsApp.
  4. Paste your wa.me link and save.
  5. Wait for Google to review and publish the change, which can take anything from a few minutes to around a day.

The chat button usually appears on mobile, beside Call, Directions and Website. Availability can vary by region and business type, so if you do not see the option, check again later or contact Google Business Profile support.

What not to do

  • Do not paste the link into your business description. Google’s guidelines do not allow links of any type in the description, and the edit may be rejected.
  • Do not replace your website link with a WhatsApp link. The website field should point to a site that represents your business.
  • Do not use a number you do not control. Contact details must be under the business’s direct control.

If the button is not working

  • Check the link has the country code and no extra characters.
  • Open the link on your own phone to confirm it opens the right chat.
  • Make sure the WhatsApp Business account is active on that number.
  • If the edit shows as “not published”, see our GBP publishing and update error fix service.

Turning chats into customers

Speed is everything in messaging. Aim to reply within minutes during business hours. Use quick replies for common questions such as pricing and location, labels to track new leads, and an away message outside working hours so no enquiry is left hanging.

Does WhatsApp help local ranking?

Google does not list chat buttons as a ranking factor. The real benefit is conversion: more people contacting you from the same visibility. Better engagement and happier customers then feed into reviews, which do support ranking. For ranking tactics, read 5 ways to rank higher on Google Maps.
