Google Reviews Disappeared from My Profile: Why and How to Recover

Yesterday your profile showed 142 reviews. Today it shows 118. Nobody told you anything, and the reviews that vanished weren’t fake, they were from real customers who took the time to write. It’s one of the most upsetting things that can happen to a local business online, and one of the most common questions we get.

When Google reviews disappeared from your profile, there’s almost always a reason. Some reasons you can fix, some you can’t, and some are temporary. Here’s how to tell which one you’re dealing with.

Google reviews disappeared

The short answer

Google reviews disappeared from your profile usually because Google’s systems removed reviews that broke its policies (including reviews collected in ways Google considers suspicious), reviews are still being checked and haven’t appeared yet, profiles were merged, or reviews were temporarily disabled for your profile or category. Reviews removed for policy violations are removed permanently. Temporary issues often resolve within days.

Why reviews go missing

Google explains the main causes on its help page About missing or delayed reviews. In plain words:

1. They broke a policy and were removed

Google filters reviews it considers fake, spammy or conflicted. Unfortunately, genuine reviews can get caught too, especially when they arrive in a pattern that looks unnatural. Google says reviews removed for policy violations are removed permanently.

In our experience, these patterns are the ones most often linked to filtered reviews:

  • Lots of reviews in a single day, like after a customer event or an offer
  • Reviews posted from the same Wi-Fi, often from a tablet at your counter
  • Staff, family or friends reviewing the business
  • Discounts or freebies offered in exchange for reviews
  • Asking only happy customers to review

2. They’re still being checked

Google checks reviews before showing them, and that can take a few days. If a customer says they posted a review and you can’t see it, wait before worrying.

3. Your profiles were merged

After a merge, reviews from both profiles can take several days to appear. If you’ve recently dealt with duplicates, this could be it. See how to remove a duplicate Google Business listing.

4. Reviews are temporarily disabled

Google sometimes turns off user content, including reviews, for certain profiles or categories for a period. Profiles that have just been reinstated after a suspension may also take time to show reviews again.

5. Your category doesn’t allow reviews

Google has removed and disabled reviews for profiles primarily categorised as schools serving children aged 6 to 18. If you’re a coaching class wrongly listed as a school, check your category.

6. The reviewer deleted it, or their account was removed

If a customer deleted their review or their Google account, the review disappears with it.

What you can do

  1. Wait a few days if the drop is sudden and recent. Temporary glitches and review checks can resolve on their own.
  2. Check your profile status for suspensions, recent merges or warnings.
  3. Check your category is correct for your business.
  4. Look at how you collect reviews. If you’ve been using a counter tablet, running offers for reviews or asking staff to post, stop. That’s the most common fixable cause.
  5. Contact Google Business Profile support if many reviews disappeared after a reinstatement or merge.

How to collect reviews so they stick

  • Share your review link or QR code so customers review from their own phone
  • Ask every customer, not just the ones you think are happy
  • Spread requests out naturally instead of pushing for 50 in a weekend
  • Never offer discounts or gifts for reviews
  • Don’t let staff or relatives review the business

A steady trickle of real reviews is far safer than a sudden spike. We explain why in how reviews impact ranking.

Can you get removed reviews back?

If Google removed them for policy reasons, generally no. Google says those removals are permanent. If they’re missing because of a delay, merge or temporary block, they often return. It’s worth asking support in those cases, but don’t expect filtered reviews to come back.

FAQs

Why did my 5-star reviews disappear?

Usually because Google’s filters judged them suspicious, often due to how or when they were collected, or because a review was still being checked.

Will my reviews come back?

Delayed or temporarily hidden reviews often do. Reviews removed for policy violations don’t.

A customer says they posted a review but I can’t see it. Why?

It may still be under review, or it may have been filtered. Ask them to check it’s visible on their own profile, and to make sure their Maps app is up to date.

Does losing reviews affect my ranking?

It can, because review count and rating are part of prominence. Rebuilding with steady genuine reviews is the fix.
