My Business Is Not Showing on Google Maps: 10 Fixes That Actually Work

You open Google Maps, type the name of your shop, and nothing. Or you search “dentist near me” standing right outside your own clinic and five other clinics show up before yours. If your business is not showing on Google Maps, there is almost always a specific reason for it, and most of those reasons can be fixed from your own dashboard.

We get this question more than any other. So here are the 10 causes we check first, roughly in the order we check them.

Business not showing on Google Maps

The short answer

A business not showing on Google Maps is usually unverified, suspended, a duplicate, set up as a hidden-address service-area business, or simply not relevant or prominent enough for the search being typed. Start by searching your exact business name. If you appear for your name but not for “service + area”, it is a ranking problem. If you do not appear even for your name, it is a profile problem.

First, figure out which problem you have

Do this test before changing anything:

  • Search your exact business name on Google Maps, from your phone, with location on.
  • Search “your service + your area”, for example “CA in Kharghar” or “cake shop Vashi”.

Not found for your own name? Jump to fixes 1 to 5. Found for your name but missing for the service search? That is a ranking issue, so go to fixes 6 to 10.

Profile problems (you don’t show up even for your name)

1. The profile isn’t verified yet

Unverified profiles have very limited visibility, and you cannot fully manage them. Open your profile and look for a “Get verified” button. If verification failed earlier, our guides on video verification and missing postcards walk through the fix.

2. The profile is suspended

A suspended profile disappears from Search and Maps. You will usually see a warning in the dashboard. Don’t create a new listing to “get around” it. That almost always makes things worse. Fix the violation first, then appeal once. Here’s how we got one reinstated in under 24 hours.

3. There is a duplicate listing

If two listings exist for the same business, Google may show the older one, or neither. Search your phone number on Google Maps. Two results means you have a duplicate that needs merging or removing.

4. You are a service-area business with a hidden address

If you hid your address because you visit customers, your business won’t show as a pin at a fixed spot. That’s normal. You can still appear in the local results, but mostly for searches inside your service area.

5. Recent edits are still under review

Changed your name, category or address in the last few days? Google may be reviewing it, and visibility can dip while that happens. Stop editing and give it time.

Ranking problems (you show for your name, not for the service)

6. Your primary category is wrong or too broad

This is the single biggest ranking lever. A physiotherapy clinic listed as “Medical clinic” will struggle for “physiotherapist near me”. Pick the most specific category that describes what your business is. Google’s help page on managing business categories explains how.

7. The searcher is too far away

Distance matters a lot. Someone searching in Airoli will mostly see Airoli businesses, even if your Vashi shop is better. You can’t change your location, but you can make sure you dominate the area close to you before worrying about the rest of the city.

8. The profile is thin

Missing services, no description, three old photos, no hours for holidays. Every empty field is a signal Google can’t use. Fill in services with short descriptions, add real photos, and complete attributes.

9. Your competitors simply have more reviews

If the top three have 200 reviews each and you have 12, that gap is hard to ignore. You don’t need to match them overnight, but you do need a steady routine for asking customers. More on that in how reviews impact ranking.

10. Your name, address and phone don’t match elsewhere

Your website says “Shop 4”, Justdial says “Shop No. 4, Ground Floor”, and your profile has an old landline. These small mismatches add up. Pick one version and make it identical everywhere.

What not to do

  • Don’t add keywords to your business name. It can work for a few weeks, then get the profile suspended. We explain why in keyword stuffing in GBP names.
  • Don’t buy reviews or ask friends to post fake ones.
  • Don’t create a second listing “just in case”.
  • Don’t keep editing your profile every day hoping something changes.

How long before you show up?

Profile issues like verification or a pending edit can clear in days. Ranking issues take longer. After fixing category and basic details, you’ll usually see some movement within a few weeks, and review-driven gains over a few months. Google explains the relevance, distance and prominence factors in Tips to improve your local ranking on Google.

FAQs

Why does my business show on Google Search but not on Maps?

Usually because the listing is a service-area business with a hidden address, or because it ranks for your name but not for general searches on the map. Check the two-search test above.

My business was showing earlier and suddenly disappeared. Why?

Sudden disappearance usually means a suspension, a duplicate being merged, or a big edit under review. Check your dashboard for warnings first.

Does paying for Google Ads make my business show on Maps?

Ads can put you in a sponsored spot, but they don’t improve your organic map ranking. Google states there is no way to pay for a better local ranking.

How do I check my ranking in different parts of my city?

Search from different locations, or use a local rank grid tool that checks your position across many points around your business.
